Our Research Program
The Canadian MPS Society’s research program began with yearly Summer Studentship Research Grants, which we still offer to undergraduate students in hopes of fostering future careers in lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) research. We have funded over $1 Million dollars with the aim of eventually finding treatments—and, yes, cures—for all types of MPS and related diseases.
Our research program has been developed with the expert guidance of our Medical Advisory Board in order to ensure continued good stewardship of the funds our donors entrust to us. We issue Requests for Applications (RFAs) annually, receive applications from many of the world’s top researchers in all areas of MPS, and then have our Grant Review Committee – made up up of experienced researchers in the field of MPS – conduct peer review which includes scoring and ranking the applications before making final recommendations to our Board of Directors. All our research funding decisions follow this rigorous process to ensure we fund the best research possible.

Summer Studentship Research Grants:
The Canadian Society for Mucopolysaccharide & Related Diseases Inc. has for many years granted a limited number of Summer Studentship Research Grants for medical students and university undergraduates, with the hope that these opportunities may result in more individuals being attracted to research careers involving lysosomal storage disorders.
The studentships are tenable at any university centre in Canada, and there is no limit on the number of studentships tenable at any given medical centre. Successful candidates are chosen by the Society’s Medical Advisory Board. Successful candidates are expected to spend at least 12 weeks working on their projects, and must submit a formal written report summarizing the results of their research when complete. Grants of $4,000.00 are payable directly to successful candidates: Students receive initial payments of $2,000.00 and receive an additional $2,000.00 upon research completion and report submission.
Deadline for submission: April 16, 2021, 5:00 PM EST
